Welcome to Semester 1 of the Year 10 Media Studies course!
During this semester you will be working on three major assignments.
We will be engaging in various activities designed to help give you a greater appreciation and awareness of the many processes, people and decisions that contribute to the media industry.
This course should equip you with the skills needed to set you up for further study, or an exciting a career in Media.
Finally, we hope you will take away from this course some great productions and insights into the exciting world of media production.
Because you have grown up in a technological media age your perceptions of the world have been influenced by your use of the media. Many of your opinions and values have been shaped by what you see, hear and read in the media, and much of what you talk about with your friends and family is based on your media experiences.
Although Media is part of everyday life, we're often passive in how we use it. As we absorb an ever-increasing number of media forms and texts, we often don't take the time to probe beneath the surface. We need to take a more active approach to how we use, enjoy and question the media.
This course has a strong emphasis on production.
This firsthand experience in creating your own media products will help you to analyse the media from a different perspective.
Through creating, producing and analysing media, you will develop production and critical thinking skills, as well as a deeper understanding about the important role of the media in our society.

Semester 2
Task 1 - Advertisement Response
In this task you will be required to research a world renowned company and write a response on your findings.
The task is broken down into two parts:
Part A
You will need to choose from 1 of the 4 companies below and research the history of its advertising campaigns.
For this task, focus on looking at the different media posters that were created by the company from its first campaign to current advertisements.
Take note of the different codes and conventions used in their advertisements, intended target audience and technology changes.

Part B
From your research in Part A, you are required to write a response (1-2 pages) based on the following questions:

Task 2 - Online Advertisement (Production)
In this task you will be working in groups to produce an advertisement for one of the companies from Task 1.
It will require pre-planning before filming, producing and editing your final advertisement using Premiere Pro.
Part A: (Pre-Planning)
In groups of 3-4, you will begin planning an online advertisement campaign for one of the companies you researched in Task 1.
Using the pre-planning pack provided, as a group you will need to complete:
Remember that there are constraints such as location, time and school rules amongst other things, so plan accordingly.
YOU MUST COMPLETE THE PRE-PLANNING PACK BEFORE FILMING !!
Part B: (Production)
In your groups you will begin filming using your pre-planning pack as your guide to produce a 20-30 second advertisement.
You will need to work together as a group effectively to ensure your finished advertisement is of a high standard.
You may want to assign roles for each member of your group to ensure everyone is utilizing their skills and giving input.

Part C: (Post-Production)
Once filming is completed, you will individually edit your own advertisement using Premiere Pro.
You will need to download all the footage to your own classroom computer.
Be sure to include music, sound effects, dialogue, foley etc to ensure the final production is to a high standard ready to be used in the companies next campaign.

Task 3 - Web Page Campaign
In this task you will be designing a landing web page for the company you created the advertisement for in Task 2.
You will be using Adobe Muse as the design platform.
Your web page will need to be dynamic, eye-catching and produced to a high standard following current design principles (typography, colour scheme, use of images, usability, navigation)
You will be required to upload your advertisement from Task 2 to the landing web page as part of the campaign launch.
Videos can be uploaded using YouTube or Vimeo (you will have to upload your advertisement to these sites) or via creating an .oem file using Adobe Edge Animate.
Your teacher will assist you will uploading via Edge Animate.

Task 2 - Movie Poster Design
Paramount Pictures are about to release a number of blockbuster movies and have approached you to design a movie poster for them. They are releasing five new films in the following genres:
Choosing one of these Genres you must create a poster of a professional standard that includes the following:
Remember to KEEP IT SIMPLE!
Professional poster designers know they must grab peoples attention quickly and communicate the core idea of the film efficiently.
When designing a poster, the advertising agency often tries to reduce the theme of the film to one or two very short sentences (a log line). The poster is then built up from there.
Before you begin you must work through this Pre-Production prep sheet and email it to your teacher.
SUGGESTION: Research some movie posters online before you begin planning.

Task 3 - Movie Trailer Production
In this production task you will work in groups of 3 or 4 and produce a movie trailer based on the poster you have made. A lot of work goes into producing video of a high standard, so you have been given plenty of time to complete this task, however you will need to engage intelligently and enthusiastically in order to pull it off.
You will need to complete a Pre-Production Pack before you begin filming your trailer:
Remember that there are constraints such as location, time and school rules amongst other things, so be careful to plan something that is achievable.
Big ideas are great, but check with your teacher if you have any doubts about whether those ideas are achievable.
Your teacher will equip you with the skills necessary to make a high quality production including principles in framing and composition, camera movement, camera operation and use of editing software to make sure you can efficiently get through the production in the set time.
NO PLANNING = NO FILMING!
