Task 1 - Advertisement Response

 

In this task you will be required to research a world renowned company and write a response on your findings.

The task is broken down into two parts:

 

Part A

 

You will need to choose from 1 of the 4 companies below and research the history of its advertising campaigns.

For this task, focus on looking at the different media posters that were created by the company from its first campaign to current advertisements.

Take note of the different codes and conventions used in their advertisements, intended target audience and technology changes.

Part B

 

From your research in Part A, you are required to write a response (1-2 pages) based on the following questions:

 

• What is the intended target audience. Has it changed over the years?
  
  
• What advertising codes and conventions are used in the campaigns?
  •  Symbols (objects, setting, colour, clothing, body language)
  • Written (captions, phrases, style, titles)
  • Technical (camera angle, lighting, editing)
    
    
• What stereotypes are conveyed through the use of the codes and conventions?
  
  
• How have changes in technology affected the way advertising campaigns are constructed?
  
  
• Do you think the campaigns were successful? If so, how and why?

Task 2 - Online Advertisement (Production)

 

 

In this task you will be working in groups to produce an advertisement for one of the companies from Task 1.

It will require pre-planning before filming, producing and editing your final advertisement using Premiere Pro.

 

Part A: (Pre-Planning)

 

In groups of 3-4, you will begin planning an online advertisement campaign for one of the companies you researched in Task 1.

Using the pre-planning pack provided, as a group you will need to complete:

 

• written treatment for the advert
• detailed design proposal
• detailed shot list
• storyboard (will be supplied by your teacher)

 

Remember that there are constraints such as location, time and school rules amongst other things, so plan accordingly.

 

YOU MUST COMPLETE THE PRE-PLANNING PACK BEFORE FILMING !!

 

 

Part B: (Production)

 

In your groups you will begin filming using your pre-planning pack as your guide to produce a 20-30 second advertisement.

You will need to work together as a group effectively to ensure your finished advertisement is of a high standard.

You may want to assign roles for each member of your group to ensure everyone is utilizing their skills and giving input.

Roles to consider would be:

 

• Director (oversee the group, delegate tasks etc)
• Producer (responsible for shot-list and aiding camera operator on filming days)
• Camera Operator
• Wardrobe (responsible for props and costumes)
• Actor / Actors

Part C: (Post-Production)

 

Once filming is completed, you will individually edit your own advertisement using Premiere Pro.

You will need to download all the footage to your own classroom computer.

Be sure to include music, sound effects, dialogue, foley etc to ensure the final production is to a high standard ready to be used in the companies next campaign.

Task 2 - Movie Poster Design

 

 

Paramount Pictures are about to release a number of blockbuster movies and have approached you to design a movie poster for them. They are releasing five new films in the following genres:

 

• Science Fiction
• Western
• Action
• Comedy
• Musical

Choosing one of these Genres you must create a poster of a professional standard that includes the following:

 

• A Headline (Title of the film, perhaps stars names)

 

• One main image (that helps tell the story)

 

• Brief text (perhaps a quote or a tag line description of the film's theme or central idea)
  
  

• Background Graphic elements (colour scheme and graphic design that align with the chosen genre)

 

• Credits and Logos

 

Remember to KEEP IT SIMPLE!

 

Professional poster designers know they must grab peoples attention quickly and communicate the core idea of the film efficiently.

When designing a poster, the advertising agency often tries to reduce the theme of the film to one or two very short sentences (a log line). The poster is then built up from there.

Before you begin you must work through this Pre-Production prep sheet and email it to your teacher.

 

SUGGESTION: Research some movie posters online before you begin planning.

 

Step by Step process:

 

• Brainstorm ideas in your visual diary - considering audience, the kind of characters usually in this kind of production, the kind of narrative or action typically featuring in the kind of production you have chosen. Use the Pre-Production prep sheet.
  
  
• Complete drawings and sketches in your visual diary before opening Photoshop. Consider:
  •  technical codes (camera angles, lighting...)
  • use of symbolic codes (objects, colour, posture, costume, action...)
  • written codes (name of production, actors' names...)
    
    

• Create a professional standard film poster using Adobe Photoshop
  
  
• You could also Include a logo made in Adobe Illustrator
  
  
• You must include digital photographs of classmates(or yourself!), as the star in the production
  
  
• Fill in the Self-evaluation sheet and submit to your teacher
  
  
• Submit your poster (as a .jpg) to your teacher

 

Note: keep in mind you will eventually create a film-trailer production based on your film poster.

Task 3 - Movie Trailer Production

 

 

In this production task you will work in groups of 3 or 4 and produce a movie trailer based on the poster you have made. A lot of work goes into producing video of a high standard, so you have been given plenty of time to complete this task, however you will need to engage intelligently and enthusiastically in order to pull it off.

 

You will need to complete a Pre-Production Pack before you begin filming your trailer:

 

• written treatment for the trailer
• detailed design proposal
• detailed shot list
• storyboard (will be supplied by your teacher)

 

Remember that there are constraints such as location, time and school rules amongst other things, so be careful to plan something that is achievable.

Big ideas are great, but check with your teacher if you have any doubts about whether those ideas are achievable.

 

Your teacher will equip you with the skills necessary to make a high quality production including principles in framing and composition, camera movement, camera operation and use of editing software to make sure you can efficiently get through the production in the set time.
