(9) Designing Products - Digital and Interactive

Products: A product is anything designed to serve a purpose.

Products may be:

* personally designed for an individual so that all relevant design considerations can be taken into account
* designed for a wide market so they are used by people with various skills, physical size, age and abilities.

It is difficult to achieve complete design satisfaction for all users.

Design Brief: This is a description of what the product has to do.

Design Specifications
* This is a more detailed account of the various criteria a product has to meet. This is usually the start of the design process and helps the designer clarify what they have to produce and the considerations they have to take into account.
* Checklists are a way of ensuring your design specifications meet all your client's (and the designers) needs.

Drawing Up a Product Design Specification

* A product design specification is written in order to have a clear agreement between the designer and the client about the product which is to be designed.

* The product design specification describes the limitations which the designer must work to, such as cost. It also describes how the product should work. This information can be used during the design work, and on completion of the project. It will allow the designer to test what has been made to see if it meets the client's requirements.

* Designers normally create product design specifications by looking at a standard checklist of all of the factors which need to be considered. Once all the research about what is required has been done, this checklist can be filled in.

* The quality of your research will affect how useful the product design specification is. If you miss out one vital piece of information, it could mean that your product may not work as the client intended.

* The specification may need to be written several times. The client and designer may not agree at first about what is to be produced or how it should be evaluated.

* Remember, the product design specification should act as a reference against which you test all your product ideas to see if they match up to the client's requirements. It is a very important document.

Elements in the Product Design Specification

These elements will probably include:

Performance: How fast, how slow, how often, what loads it will withstand (number of hits per minute).

Interaction with the environment: Temperature range, vibration level, how dirty etc.

Life in service: How long the service life of the product should be.

Maintenance: When maintenance will be required, how access to parts is provided. Available uploading time.

Other factors may include:Target product cost, Completion, Delivery, Packaging, Quantity, Size, Weight, Appearance, Materials/medium, Ergonomics, Australian Standards, Reliability, Testing, Safety, Patents, Social correctness, Relevance, & Acceptance.
