W3 Schools: www.w3schools.com. Go to "Learn HTML"

Web Developers Virtual Library: www.wdvl.com. Look for the Tutorial called "Introduction to HTML"

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C): www.w3.org. W3C is the international standards body for the web. Go to HTML (in the "W3C A to Z" menu) then choose "Tutorial" and find "Getting started with HTML" by Dave Raggett

W3 Schools: www.w3schools.com. Has a huge range of tutorials and references for all web technologies. Try the HTML "Quick Starter". Also the "references" section has complete lists of HTML tags.

Web Design Group: www.htmlhelp.com. In the "Design Elements" section, take a look at the article "Image use on the web" for more information about choosing GIF or JPG formats for your website.

Webmonkey: webmonkey.wired.com Long-running resource dedicated to learning about the web with many resources for starting out in HTML.
